There he was. They had walked into the mall together, he and his mom, but she had skedaddled herself off to some obscure corner of the office store to look for bargains and he was left standing dumbstruck in the aisle with Macy's coupons in his hands.
He dreaded the weekends. A knock on his door at the ungodly hour of eight and his mom opening it a crack to inform him it was time to get up because she needed him to drive. She had her license revoked because the cops caught her speeding one too many times. So now he was the taxi driver-great!
It was still early and at the store was empty except for the cologne attendant and a few other harebrained patrons like his mom. He stared straight ahead of him at the cologne counter wondering if he sprayed some of the robust stuff in his eyes if that would warrant a trip to the surgery. He peeked at his watch-too late. There would already be a line-up of weekend emergencies waiting for their names to be called. With the store this quite he could hear the din of classical piano music mixed with the heavy metal coming from the opposite side of the store.
He looked back down at his Macy's coupons and heaved a sigh. What was he about to do with these? Blowing out a sigh he started moving forward, the laces of his ratty sneakers flopping their aglets against the hard tile floor. He stopped. He did have pretty gnarly sneakers. He looked at them. The shoelaces where knotted where they had broken and the sole of his left shoe flopped open like a mouth. He sieved thru the Macy's coupons in his hands to work out if one of them debated shoes.
He figured he would as well go have a look.
He reached the shelves and was prepared to be disappointed when all he could see where tasseled loafers and Velcro. He rounded a corner and there on the display table were a pair of Converse sneakers with a skull and flames twisting around the heel of The pair was mostly black, the sole white, and he stuffed the Macy's coupons into his hoodie pocket so he could touch the sneakers.
After taking it off the display table he held it up and examined it ruefully. White sole, slim in the toes, doubtless sweet for skating. They turned out to be just his size, so he flopped into one of the chairs and started his sneaks. He tightened the laces, tied them then stood up. They even looked good. There needed to be a catch. Feeling doubtful he pulled out the Macy's coupons one more time to work out if there was some disclaimer in the footnotes exclaiming he wasn't permitted to use this coupon on the pair of boots that were made for him. There was nothing. He could get the shoes. He looked at the other coupons in his hand. Next stop-hoodies.
